The short version: beanspill transcribes your voice entirely on your device — your audio and transcripts never leave your machine. We collect no personal data by default. Optional, anonymous usage stats are off unless you turn them on. We never sell your data.
This policy applies to the beanspill desktop app (macOS and Windows) and the website beanspill.app. "We" / "beanspill" refers to the makers of the app. Questions: hello@beanspill.app.
Core dictation is fully on-device. The speech-recognition model runs locally on your computer. Your audio is never uploaded, and your transcribed text never leaves your machine — it's inserted at your cursor and saved only in your local history on your own disk. We can't see it, and there's no account or sign-in for dictation.
To understand how many people use beanspill and how often, the app can send anonymous usage events. This is off by default — we ask you once during setup, and you can change it anytime in Settings → Anonymous usage data.
These events go to our own servers. We do not log your IP address with them. Because the data is anonymous and aggregate, we use it only to improve the product. You can opt out at any time, which also deletes the random ID from your device.
The paid Pro upgrade adds AI cleanup of your dictation and full-length file transcription. Like dictation, it runs entirely on your device — your text and audio are not sent anywhere. The only network traffic Pro adds is licence-key validation with our payment provider, which involves your licence key and no dictation content.
We plan an optional, subscription-based AI Assistant you would trigger deliberately. When it launches and you use it, the relevant data would be sent to our servers (which call the Anthropic Claude API) only for that request:
This data would be used solely to generate your answer. It is not used to train models, and we won't retain your requests or screenshots beyond what's needed to serve the response. On-device dictation and cleanup always remain local.
The marketing site, beanspill.app, uses analytics and advertising tools to measure traffic and ad performance. These may set cookies and run only on the website (not in the app):
If you join the waitlist, we collect the email you provide (via Formspree) solely to notify you about beanspill. Optional survey answers help us prioritize features. We won't sell or share your address, and you can ask us to delete it anytime.
Checkout and payment for the Pro upgrade are handled by our payment provider (Polar) acting as Merchant of Record. They process your payment details under their own privacy policy; we never see or store your full card information.
Depending on where you live (including the EU/EEA under GDPR and California under CCPA), you may have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data, and to object to processing. For the app, the strongest control is built in: usage analytics are opt-in and reversible, and dictation data never leaves your device in the first place.
